CH 9: Genetic Sequence and Player Level
In the afternoon, the amount of work completed was almost three times that of the morning.
In total, there were about fifty pieces of wood of varying thickness, which the players tied with ropes and carts and hauled to the wall of the Old Nursing home.
Honestly, the performance of these players exceeded Chu Guang's expectations.
Each piece of wood was between 10 to 18 meters long, some even reaching 20 meters, and most were as thick as a thigh.
Chu Guang calculated that there were a total of 2000 contribution points.
Among them, Lao Bai earned the most, accumulating 800 points by himself. Level 8 Gale had the worst performance; his clone body wasn't good at physical labor, having just the physique of an ordinary person, so he only earned 300 points after working all day.
As for what these contribution points were used for?
Chu Guang hadn't figured it out yet.
The shelter was extremely poor; he only had two lollipops in his pocket. He used to have a compressed biscuit, but he had already eaten it.
After thinking for a while, he only told the players that besides needing to wait three days, resurrection also required spending resurrection coins.
And resurrection coins had to be purchased with contribution points.
Although the purchasing power of contribution points was a bit weak, the players didn't seem to mind.
After all, it was still the closed beta phase, and it was understandable that there was little game content. As long as there was no wipe, they could hoard some money and find ways to spend it when the game officially launched.
Additionally, contribution points didn't have a physical form; they were just numbers that could only be viewed online after logging out.
Although Chu Guang also wanted to follow Boulder City’s example and create some tangible coins, the shelter's conditions were too harsh, and he couldn't even gather the materials for "minting coins."
He couldn't just give players chips.
Although chips were hard currency around Clear Spring City, he didn't have many left either.
Moreover, directly giving them chips wouldn't work; the players couldn't trade at survivor settlements themselves.
Chu Guang could communicate with the survivors because his soul had traveled to this world, and he knew the language of this world.
However, the players were using clone bodies, which were like blank slates, lacking even basic intelligence, let alone any inherited memories.
The language used by the survivors around Clear Spring City was called The Language of the Federation of People, It was the common language around here.
This language was completely different from any language of any country or ethnic group in the real world, though it had some similarities in grammar and pronunciation with Chinese.
Chu Guang considered developing a set of translation tools in the future to solve the communication issues between players and NPCs and redesign the distribution and economic systems.
But that wasn't possible now.
...
After tallying today’s work results, it was getting late.
Chu Guang looked up at the setting sun on the horizon and squinted slightly.
It was getting to be evening.
"Manager, I found that our outpost doesn't have electricity," Ample Time approached and said, "Why don't we try to get a generator?"
This question hit the mark.
But it was also useless.
"We don't have an extra generator," Chu Guang looked at him, "Does anyone here know about this stuff? Or have any electrical-related skills?"
The players looked at each other.
"Can't we run a wire up from the underground?" Night Ten asked a rather naive question.
"The wire wouldn't be long enough, and the shelter's energy isn't unlimited. Even if it worked short-term, long-term problems would still be unsolvable and would create even greater risks."
At this point, Chu Guang paused.
"It's getting late, we should log off."
Here, logging off meant the players were "logging out."
Although it wasn't completely dark yet, it was already 5 PM, and it would soon be daylight in China's parallel world.
Unconsciously, the players had been in the game world for quite a while, and as they snapped back to reality, they all wore expressions of reluctance.
It felt like there were still many places in this world worth exploring.
But they had work to do during the day, so they couldn't stay here all the time.
…
Inside Shelter 404.
Watching the players lying down in the pods, Chu Guang thought he might try recruiting some idle people who didn't have daytime work.
Or players from other time zones.
Otherwise, the large outpost would be empty at night, which wasn't ideal for security.
"I'll continue sleeping in the shelter tonight."
He didn't want to sleep in that "doghouse" on Bett Street unless necessary.
As Chu Guang was pondering what to do next, Little Seven came up to him.
"Manager."
"What's up?"
"The health report of the clone bodies has been updated. Do you want to take a look?"
Chu Guang hesitated slightly.
"...Health report?"
"Yes! Every time a player logs out normally, the pod scans the clone body, records its physical condition, and extracts a certain amount of embryonic stem cells for backup, documenting the gene sequence development progress—"
"Wait, what's the gene sequence?"
Hearing this unfamiliar term, Chu Guang felt like he had missed some crucial information.
Faced with the administrator's question, Little Seven answered without hesitation.
"Didn't you notice? Each player's clone body is made from different DNA, and the gene sequence is the code for this DNA."
Chu Guang immediately asked, "What about the development progress?"
"Each DNA sequence is carefully designed, but unfortunately, we haven't fully mastered the mysteries of life."
"Not all traits in the genetic information are fully expressed. It's like an athlete's child is more likely to become an athlete, but isn't born as one."
"The development progress refers to the expression level of special segments in the gene sequence, usually expressed as a percentage."
"For example, 100% development progress means the organism's capabilities are almost at the genetic design's limit, achieving the perfect state... but that's almost impossible."
"Currently, the four gene sequences we activated have development progress between 0% and 1%. Research shows that constant survival instincts and physical training can increase this value."
If you understand "gene sequences" as classes, "development progress" is like levels.
A gene sequence focusing on strength enhancement is like a "barbarian" in D&D rules, inherently possessing greater strength and favoring strength attribute improvements.
For example, "The White Horse Galloping"
Other players were normal, but his body was hairy and burly, clearly abnormal.
Damn.
These clone bodies—no, players—could level up!
And there were even talent settings!
He just found out about this awesome feature now!
Looking at Little Seven calmly explaining, Chu Guang couldn't help but ask.
"Why are you telling me this important thing just now???"
Little Seven replied aggrievedly, "Didn't you tell me not to speak suddenly? I intended to tell you at the beginning."
Chu Guang: "..."
This guy…
He definitely did it on purpose!
